The Time Traveller's Wife

So I'm really caught up in the book I'm reading now.  It's all Scotty's fault cause he bought it for me as a "thanks for letting me crash at your place" gift.  I don't want to devour it too quickly though because I'm really enjoying it. I want to savour it.

It's about two people Henry and Clare.  Henry is a time traveller. So far the author hasn't gone into too much detail as to the mechanics of that.  He just flip flops from the present into the past and future of his own life and into places that were not part of his life and he can't control when it happens or where he ends up.  In his travelling he meets Clare at different ages between 5 and 17 and he ranges in age from 30 to 40 during these meetings.  The book is essentially about the relationship between Henry and Clare.

It's an interesting examination of life in the sense that it makes you wonder how would you be in life if you knew the outcome of everything. If you knew what job you would have and for how long, who you were going to marry and how many kids you would have. How would you live your life then?  The relationship between Henry and Clare is so easy.  They know the outcome so they don't feel any awkwardness towards each other. It's just easy to be together knowing how things end up. So my question is would you want to know your future?

I would rather not.  At the same time, aspects of that would be great but the majority of what makes life amazing is the adventure of never knowing what will happen.  I think it's better to have this list of things I want to do rather than have a list of things I know I'll do because it's just the way it is.  Whichever way the world works I at least enjoy the illusion I control everything. Well not everything, but at least my own action or inaction.

The last three days have pretty much been about my inaction.  I didn't do much last night.  I started to work on the DVD of Kate and Stuart's wedding but I quickly got bored and returned to reading my book while listening to Canadian idol in the background. At about 9, Kate and Stuart came by after having visited their new condo for the last time before the take possession on Thursday. They won't be far from me once they move in.  It will probably be a 20 minute bus ride to their place from mine.

Tonight Frances, Adam, Lisa, Greg and I are going to see Bon Cop, Bad Cop.  It looks great, but I'll have my review tomorrow. I like the whole English/French communication problem aspect of the story.  It is certainly something I understand about my country.  Two completely different worlds that tend to collide and refuse to get along.  I think this movie will be a very interesting social commentary at the very least.
